How to unlock a PDF and remove its password

Remove a password from a PDF you are allowed to open, understand the two kinds of PDF password, and know what to do when a file will not unlock.

Quick answer

To unlock a PDF, open an unlock tool, add the file, enter the password that opens it, and download the unprotected copy. With FreePDFKit this runs in your browser, so the file and the password are not uploaded. It cannot guess or crack a forgotten password: you need the right one, or, for a PDF that already opens freely but restricts copying or printing, an empty password.

Two kinds of PDF password

“Password-protected” can mean two different things, and which one you have decides what to type:

Open passwordPermissions password
What it doesStops anyone reading the file without itLets the file open, but restricts printing, copying or editing
You noticeA prompt appears as soon as you open the PDFThe file opens, but some actions are greyed out

Unlock a PDF in five steps

  1. Open Unlock PDF and add the protected file.
  2. Type the password that currently opens it. For a file that opens freely but is restricted, leave the field empty.
  3. Choose Unlock PDF.
  4. Download the new copy, saved as the original name with -unlocked added.
  5. Open it to confirm it no longer asks for a password and that the pages look right.

The original file is never changed; unlocking always creates a new copy.

What the unlocked copy contains

The tool decrypts the file and then rebuilds it page by page into a clean, unencrypted PDF. The pages look the same as before, but anything that lives outside the pages is not carried over: bookmarks (the outline panel) and fillable form fields. If either matters, keep the original alongside the copy, or re-create what you need after unlocking.

When a PDF will not unlock

  • “That password is incorrect.” The password was not accepted. Re-type it carefully; passwords are case-sensitive.
  • “This PDF needs its opening password.” The file has an open password and the field was empty.
  • “This PDF isn’t password-protected.” There is nothing to remove. If it still refuses to print or copy, check whether another tool or your viewer is the cause.
  • “Uses an encryption method your browser can’t open.” FreePDFKit handles AES-256 and RC4, not AES-128. Open the file in a desktop PDF app, remove the password there, and try again if needed.
  • A forgotten password. There is no shortcut here. A tool that promised to recover it would be guessing, and this one does not.

Only unlock files you are allowed to

Remove protection from documents you own or have permission to change, such as your own bank statement or a contract you were given the password to. FreePDFKit does not circumvent DRM on third-party content, and a password that someone chose to put on a file is a decision to respect.

After you unlock it

  • Combine it with other files using Merge PDF; password-protected files cannot be merged until they are unlocked. The merge guide covers the order and what to check.
  • Shrink it with Compress PDF if it is too large to send.
  • Need it protected again, with a password you control? Add a new one and follow the password-protection guide for sharing the password safely.

Why unlock in the browser

A protected PDF is usually sensitive, and so is its password. Because unlocking runs locally in your browser tab, neither the file nor the password is sent to a server. See the private PDF tools guide for how to judge any tool’s privacy claim.

Common questions

Can I unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

Not with FreePDFKit. It removes a password you can supply; it does not guess or crack one. If you forgot it, ask the person who created or sent the file, or check where you saved it.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Only unlock files you own or are authorized to modify. FreePDFKit does not bypass DRM on third-party content. This is general information, not legal advice.

What is the difference between an open password and a permissions password?

An open password is needed to read the file at all. A permissions password lets the file open freely but restricts actions such as printing, copying or editing. To remove restrictions from a file that opens without a password, leave the password field empty.

Why does it say my password is incorrect?

The password was not accepted. Check for typing mistakes, caps lock and look-alike characters, and use the password that opens the file today, not an older one.

Why can’t my browser open this PDF’s encryption?

FreePDFKit supports AES-256 and RC4 encryption but not AES-128, which some Acrobat 7–9 files use. Remove the password in a desktop PDF app instead.

Does the unlocked copy keep bookmarks and form fields?

No. The copy is rebuilt page by page, so the pages look the same but the bookmark panel and fillable form fields are not carried over. Check the copy if you rely on them.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The password stays in your browser tab, and the file is processed on your device.
