How to merge PDF files online

A practical, privacy-aware workflow for combining PDFs in the right order, keeping bookmarks and form fields, and checking the result before you share it.

Quick answer

To merge PDFs online, open a PDF merger, add the files, drag them into the order readers should see, create the combined document, and open the result to check the page count. With FreePDFKit the merge runs in your browser, so the files are not uploaded, and each file’s bookmarks and form fields are carried into the merged PDF.

Merge PDFs in five steps

  1. Open Merge PDF and add two or more files.
  2. Drag the files into the order readers should see them.
  3. Merge, then download the combined file (it is saved as merged-document.pdf).
  4. Open the output and check the page count, first and last pages, and orientation.
  5. Keep the originals until you have confirmed the result is right.

Get the order right

The order of the files in the list is the order of the pages in the result, so the most common merge mistake is simply the wrong file order. Similar names are the usual trap: Report_v2.pdf, Report_final.pdf and Report-appendix.pdf sort differently in every file picker. Number the files before you start (01-cover.pdf, 02-report.pdf, 03-appendix.pdf) and the order stays obvious even when you add them in one go.

What a merge keeps, and what to re-check

A merge copies the pages of each file into a new document. It does not recompress them, so text, vector graphics and images look exactly as they did. Document-level features need a quick look afterwards:

ItemWhat to expect
Page content and qualityUnchanged. Pages are copied, not re-rendered or recompressed.
BookmarksCarried over from each file, with their targets moved to the right pages in the merged document.
Form fieldsCarried over from each file. Test a few fields if the packet is meant to be filled in.
Title and authorTaken from the first file.
Digital signaturesNot valid in the new file. A signature covers the exact bytes of the original, so sign after merging.
Password-protected filesMust be unlocked first with Unlock PDF; you need to know the password.

Local processing versus upload-based processing

A browser-local workflow can be useful for confidential documents because the core file operation happens in the tab after the page loads. It still depends on browser memory and does not replace a formal records-management or access-control system. For sensitive work, read the tool’s privacy note and retain a controlled original. The local versus cloud guide explains how to check a privacy claim yourself.

Big merges and phones

Because the work happens on your device, very large scans can be slow or run out of memory, especially on a phone. Merge in smaller groups and combine the intermediate files, and close other tabs first. The guide to merging PDFs on a phone covers picking files, saving and verifying on mobile.

After merging

Common mistakes

  • Adding Report-final.pdf before Report-appendix.pdf because filenames were not reviewed.
  • Merging a signed PDF and expecting the signature to remain valid.
  • Deleting the originals before opening the output.
  • Sharing a large merged file without checking the recipient’s attachment limit.

People also ask

Common questions

Does merging change the original PDFs?

No. A merge tool creates a new combined file. Keep the originals until you have opened and checked the output.

Can I reorder PDFs before merging?

Yes. Drag the files up or down in the list. The file order becomes the page order of the merged document, so the first file supplies the first pages.

Can I merge PDFs without uploading them?

Yes, if the tool processes locally. FreePDFKit merges in your browser tab, so the PDFs are not sent to a server for the merge. For any other tool, read its privacy note and check whether the workflow makes a network upload.

Are bookmarks and form fields kept when I merge PDFs?

FreePDFKit copies each file’s bookmarks and form fields into the merged document and adjusts the bookmarks to point at the right pages. Check them after merging. A digital signature on a source file will not stay valid in a new combined document.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then merge the unlocked copy.

How large can the PDFs be?

The limit is your device’s memory. For most tools FreePDFKit allows files up to 256 MB each on a typical desktop, and 128 MB on devices that report low memory, such as many phones.

What should I check after merging?

Check the page count, the first and last pages, orientation, bookmarks if the files had them, and whether forms or annotations still behave as expected.
