Short verdict
Yes for everyday use. Smallpdf is a long-running, certified service with clear deletion rules. The open question is not whether Smallpdf is careful, but whether your document should be uploaded anywhere in the first place.
Smallpdf security features
From Smallpdf’s own safety article, trust center and privacy policy, checked on 6 October 2026:
- Encryption in transit: files are protected during transfer with 256-bit TLS encryption.
- Automatic deletion: files from free tools are deleted after one hour. Files kept in an account stay until you delete them, then are removed within one hour.
- Certification and compliance: it is ISO/IEC 27001 certified with annual audits, and says it complies with GDPR, CCPA and Switzerland’s nFADP.
- Location: it is a Swiss-based company and processes data on EU servers.
- AI tools: files used with Chat with PDF, AI PDF Summarizer and Translate PDF are not used to train models, and are not stored unless you save the results.
Risks and limitations
- Your file is uploaded. Every Smallpdf tool works on its servers, so a copy exists there for at least the processing and deletion window.
- Stored files stay. Anything saved to your account remains until you delete it. Clear out documents you no longer need.
- Access is limited, not zero. The trust center says data is accessed in limited ways, for example to answer support requests or fix technical problems.
- AI logs. Interaction logs from AI tools may be stored for debugging and abuse prevention, decoupled from identifiers, according to its privacy policy.
- Policy, not proof. Certifications and policies describe how Smallpdf says it operates. You cannot inspect its servers yourself.
Is Smallpdf free?
Smallpdf offers free tools with usage limits and a paid Pro plan with a free trial. Its tool pages note that usage limits may apply. When to think twice before uploading
- Identity documents, bank statements, medical or legal records.
- Anything covered by an NDA, a client contract or a data-protection policy at work.
- Files you would have to report if they were exposed.
