Convert PDF to JPG in five steps
- Open PDF to JPG and add the PDF.
- Choose All pages, or Selected pages and type a list such as
1, 3, 5-8. - Choose the image quality (see the table below).
- Convert, then download the images. For several pages, use Download all to get one ZIP.
- Open a few images at the size you will use them and check the text and fine detail.
Pick the quality for the job
Quality here means the resolution each page is drawn at, and it controls both sharpness and file size. The default is the highest level, so lower it when you only need a preview.
| Level | Resolution | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Small files | 72 DPI (screen) | Quick previews, thumbnails and web sharing |
| Balanced | 150 DPI | Everyday documents, email and on-screen reading |
| Best detail | 300 DPI (print) | Printing, zooming in and small type |
JPG images are saved at 92% JPEG quality at every level. At 300 DPI an A4 page is roughly 2,480 by 3,508 pixels, around 8.7 megapixels, so a long document at the top level needs real memory while it renders.
JPG, PNG or the original pictures?
| PDF to JPG | PDF to PNG | Extract Images | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you get | Each page as a JPG | Each page as a lossless PNG | The pictures embedded in the PDF |
| Best for | Photos and everyday pages | Sharp text, diagrams and line art | Reusing a logo or photo at original quality |
| File size | Smaller | Larger | Depends on the pictures |
| Includes text and layout | Yes, as pixels | Yes, as pixels | No, pictures only |
Rendering a page turns everything on it, including text, into pixels, so the result is no longer searchable or selectable. If you only want the photos inside a document, Extract Images gives you those pictures directly, and PDF to PNG is the lossless option for whole pages.
Confirm that “local” applies to the conversion
A page can be hosted online and still process a document locally. Look for a clear statement about the conversion step itself, not just a privacy slogan. FreePDFKit renders pages in your browser after the page loads, so the PDF is not sent to a server; the local versus cloud guide shows how to check this yourself in your browser’s network tool.
If something goes wrong
- “Enter valid page numbers.” Use numbers and ranges such as
1, 3, 5-8, within the document’s page count. - “This PDF is password-protected.” Unlock it first with Unlock PDF (see the unlock guide), then convert the unlocked copy.
- The tab slows down or crashes. Export fewer pages at a time, or lower the quality; close other tabs first.
- Images look soft. Re-export at a higher level.
Privacy and device limits
Local processing removes the upload, but it does not secure a shared or unlocked device, and the images land in your downloads folder, so delete them when you are done with sensitive pages. Work from a copy, and verify every image before you delete the original.
Going the other way
To turn images back into a document, use JPG to PDF and the images-to-PDF guide. Exported pages can also be large, so see the compression guide if you rebuild a PDF from them.

Common questions
Does PDF to JPG convert the whole document?
You choose. Export every page, or enter the pages you want, such as 1, 3, 5-8. Each page becomes one image.
Which quality level should I choose?
Small files (72 DPI) for quick previews and web sharing, Balanced (150 DPI) for everyday reading and email, and Best detail (300 DPI) for print and close reading. Higher quality makes larger files and uses more memory.
Is JPG or PNG better for PDF pages?
JPG is usually smaller and suits pages with photos. PNG is lossless, so it keeps text, diagrams and line art crisp, at the cost of larger files.
Why are my exported images blurry?
The resolution was too low for how you are viewing them. Re-export at Balanced or Best detail. Remember that a page rendered at 72 DPI is only about a quarter as wide in pixels as one at 150 DPI.
Do I get one file or many?
One image per page. When you export more than one page, Download all gives you a single ZIP file, named after your PDF, instead of a pile of downloads.
What is the difference between PDF to JPG and Extract Images?
PDF to JPG renders whole pages, text and layout included. Extract Images pulls out the pictures embedded in the PDF at their original resolution, without the page around them.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Remove the password first with Unlock PDF (you need to know it), then export the unlocked copy.
Can a local converter handle a large PDF?
Up to a point. Files up to 256 MB are accepted, or 128 MB on browsers that report 4 GB of memory or less. Many pages at 300 DPI use a lot of memory, so export in batches of pages if the tab slows down.
